Now and Then: Meryl Streep

From a cheerleader in high school to Hollywood's A-List, Meryl Streep has always been such a stunning woman. She is without a doubt one of my favorite actresses and is so versatile (Mamma Mia! to the Devil Wears Prada to Julie and Julia). A funny side note: My beautiful Mom always gets mistaken for her! She is quite lovely as well :)

Tour de l'Europe: Rome

This is the first in a series of posts that are inspired by the semester I spent abroad in Rome, Italy last Fall! I will highlight a city, place, or museum in each post and try to describe a bit of the culture, giving you a "Tour de l'Europe." So, I thought it was fitting to start off with my "home city:" Roma.

Oh Rome. Where to begin?

Imagine: Cobbled, dusty streets warmed by the golden Italian sun. Vespas zipping along, red checkered tablecloths on outside restaurant tables, hear the sounds of foaming milk for strong cappuccino, street artists in Piazza Navona, and rich gelato dripping down the sides of cones. Storefront windows are filled with leather and the trickled down fashions from Milan.

People: Italians are friendly and laid back. Although in the city, like in any other, the people are less likely to slow down and chat.

Food: Pasta and pizza are offered in almost every restaurant, you are left to find which are the good places to dine. There are essentially two types of pizza offered in Rome: pizza by the slice and personal pizzas typically ordered at a sit-down restaurant. By the slice, the pizza has a thicker, crunchy crust with more sauce. Personal pizzas tend to have a thin crust with more inventive toppings (although my favorite is the simple margarita pizza with lots of basil). Gelato is a must in Rome. My favorite gelato in Rome is the dark chocolate gelato found at Giolitti's (a short trip from the Pantheon) and my favorite go-to gelato shop is Old Bridge, next to the Vatican. Of course, the wine and the cappuccino are, well, quite divine.

Places: The Colosseum. The Roman Forum. Scholar's Lounge. Trastevere (the coolest neighborhood in Rome). The Four Major Basilicas. Fiddler's Elbow. The Spanish Steps. Porta Portese. Keyhole at Knight's of Malta Headquarters. The Mouth of Truth (Audrey loved it, so do I). Finnegans. Gardens at Santa Sabina (great view of Rome). Climb the Scala Santa. Pantheon. Walk along the Tiber. St. Peter in Chains. Piazza Navona. St. Maria del Popolo. St. Luigi. San Eustacio.

Pictures: First, a picture of street artists on the top of the Spanish steps. Second, a commemoration to Rome's greatest gelato. Third, the cross inside of the Colosseum. Fourth, the merry-go-round at Piazza Navona's Christmas Festival. Lastly, the Spanish Steps.

P.S. Don't think I've forgotten the Vatican, I just thought it deserved a separate post because of how amazing it is :)

I love making new goals for summer, setting my sights high and dreaming up the most wonderful adventures I'll have. This summer, I want to road trip with the car I'm getting and learn to play the guitar. What are some of your goals and summer dreams?

In any case, welcome back summer. Please stay for quite a while...

Playlist: Enjoying Peace

Finals are over. A beautiful semester has come to a close and home has called me back. Since most of my friends and siblings are still in school, I'm taking these first days of my holiday to just relax and be peaceful. I thought I would share a couple of the songs I have been listening to non-stop since coming home.

Street Trends: Thick Knits

Admittedly, it is getting a little late in the season to be wearing knits. I wanted to note that chunky knits were everywhere over the fall and winter seasons. But, as I was looking up different knits, I realized that the trend is continuing into the summer! Now hear me out, I'm not talking about thick wool straight from the Aran Islands. I've noticed that many designers are picking up the knit style and combining it with lighter, airy patterns and materials. For instance, the cotton pullovers and vest above are designed to be airy and fresh, but to adopt the look of the knits that were in store windows everywhere.

So, here is a little more information on the pieces above...

1. Textured Linen Pullover by J. Jill: White linen is the most summery fabric I can think of, but when combined with the loose knit pattern it seems cozy and comfortable.
2. Heat Index Pullover at Anthropologie: Runs big and comes in several colors (plus, it's on sale!). It's soft fabric makes you feel relaxed, but you stay cool because of the lightness of the material.
3. Drop Knit Pattern Sweater Vest at Forever 21: Inexpensive with cutouts in the back.

   (a little off-beat, but I like it)

Quote of the Day: Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have been blessed in my life to have travelled much of the world. I have seen some of the greatest works of art ever created from Rome to New York to London. But few have taken my breath away like Bernini's Apollo and Daphne pictured above. Incredible, isn't it?

Rainy Days in London.

Rainy Days in London.

Rainy Days in London. by Liz2000 featuring rubber boots

Today, the skies have just opened up and it has been raining without stop, the type of rain that makes me consider whether building an ark is entirely ridiculous. One thing I do know is that a pair of good rain boots, a raincoat, and an umbrella are essentials for this type of weather. I thought I'd learn from the sturdy Brits who deal with monsoon weather like this much more frequently. So, look to these British staples to stay dry as the end of April showers turn to May flowers.

Oh, and don't forget to have a strong cup of tea to stay warm and keep the chill away. As the poster says: "Keep Calm and Put the Kettle On." (I just love those sayings, don't you?)

Here's a fun distraction from around the web: British slang! This website has the funniest array of common English expressions and word usage. For example if you say a girl is "crackin" it means she's stunning. A kip is a short nap and you probably don't want to be called daft or naff. The list goes on and on! An interesting diversion for a rainy afternoon and a good preparation for any travel to the UK!

P.S. Here are a few rainy day songs for some cheer, some pop culture, and some relaxation.

"Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point." - C.S. Lewis

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Somewhere I Have Never Travelled

Somewhere I Have Never Travelled
(By E. E. Cummings) Somewhere I have never travelled, gladly beyond Any experience, your eyes have their silence: In your most frail gesture are things which enclose me, Or which I cannot touch because they are too near Your slightest look easily will unclose me Though I have closed myself as fingers, You open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens (Touching skillfully, mysteriously)her first rose Or if your wish be to close me, I and My life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly, As when the heart of this flower imagines The snow carefully everywhere descending; Nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals The power of your intense fragility: whose texture Compels me with the color of its countries, Rendering death and forever with each breathing (I do not know what it is about you that closes And opens; only something in me understands The voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses) Nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands
